Firstly, I wanted to say such a big thank you for the comments on yesterday's post! They made me so happy and made me feel like my dreams are definitely going to come through! It's made me now want to be more open when it comes to sharing dreams, goals, plans and ideas. So thank you, thank you, thank you for the support!
Later today, I have a beautiful "littlest things" guest post from Brittany so make sure you check it out because it's so lovely, just like Brittany herself. In the meantime, seeing as this winter feels like it's never going to end...here is my survival guide to help get us through the end of it:

It's suppose to be spring dammit! But it doesn't seem like that's going to be happening any time soon. Over here, it's meant to be the coldest March in some outrageous amount of years! While I am craving some summer sun, fresh fruit and floral dresses, it seems I'll have to put up with this never-ending winter for another month. I was suppose to share my "winter survival guide" back when I posted this post, but now it seems I have got another opportunity. So here it is;
1. pretend diets don't exist: There's nothing worse than feely guilty about wanting to indulge in some yummy winter comfort food. I love enjoying big stews with lots of potatoes, ordering insane amounts of takeaway's and drinking way too many hot chocolates. It's one of my favourite parts of winter. Then, come spring, when the sun decides to shine again, that's when I feel more inspired to eat healthy meals and yummy salads. Salads & winter just do.NOT.go!
2. get outside: I always try to get outside every day, even if it looks so ridiculously miserable! It just makes coming back inside that much more enjoyable! Then when it's not too miserable, winter hikes are some of my favourite things in the world. The mixture of the smell of wood fires burning, the winter fog and chucking on a bunch of layers to brave the cold makes me so happy. Then there's also the big pub lunch to warm you up. This is what I love to do if I can't get to the mountains to go skiing!
3. drink ridiculous amounts of tea: When your hot-chocolated-out, turn to a comforting cup of tea. There's nothing better than a cup of tea at around 4 o'clock in the afternoon, when it's perhaps too late for a coffee. I always sip on mine super slowly while chilling out on the couch and probably pinning away. It's even better when it's snowing, hailing, raining or blowing a gail outside. Excessive tea drinking just isn't the same in the warmer months so I lap it up in the winter.
4. spend days by the fire: There really couldn't be anything more luxurious than this. It's way better when a bottle of red wine is involved. Red wine + crackling fire = winter perfection, and kind of makes me feel like I wouldn't mind if it was winter, always!
5. have tv marathons: Winter is definitely the best time for these. Over Christmas and New Year, George and I watched every single episode of Homeland! After that, it was Revenge, and Hart of Dixie is even in the mix! It will make you feel super lazy, but who cares? :)
6. invest in some amazing winter chill-out clothes: This definitely doesn't have to be a huge investment, my all time favourite trackies are these ones that I got in Vail, Colorado back in 2007! I wear them pretty much every single day throughout the winter and I love them so much it's crazy! My favourite winter purchase of this year has been this H&M scarf that cost me £4 (!), it's so amazing that I also use it as a blanket! Winter chill-out clothes are so important, because if you don't have good ones then you just cannot enjoy numbers 3, 4 and 5 to their full extent.

I love this. And you're so right- salads and cold weather is horrid.
ReplyDeleteI'm heading out to the East Coast next week, so I'm saying farewell to the California sun and hello to comfort foods and cuddles.
Love these winter tips! It will be here before you know it in Joburg (boo!). Series marathons with gluwien by the fire are one of the absolute best things ever :)

Sooooo I won't tell you that it's 80 F here in Los Angeles?
ReplyDeleteYeeeeah. Thank you for reminding me that I actually DO like winter, and you're so right about the going out to come back in thing- I do this on my lunch breaks at work. Our office is FREEZING some days, but if you go outside then when you come back, it feels toasty! xx
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more about the TV shows -- I've worked my way through a RIDICULOUS number of them this year.

Wow Soph! I am normally not a Winter person but you made it sound pretty darn good :)
ReplyDeleteAnd that photo is so dreamy... x
I agree with all of your tips...especially #2. My first experience in a real winter (snow and all), I learned all about what "cabin fever" was. awful. Now, I try to get outside as much as possible and enjoy it. And you can always follow up a day out in the cold with #3, #4 & #5 while all cozy'd up in #6. ;)
